How Can You Remember New English Vocabulary Without Forgetting It?

Learning new English words is easy to measure and surprisingly hard to maintain. A learner can study twenty words on Monday and recognize only a few of them by Friday. This does not mean the learner has a bad memory. Words disappear when they are learned without a situation, used only once, or reviewed at the wrong time. Vocabulary becomes durable when it is connected to meaning, experience, and repeated use.
Begin with words you are likely to need. A long list of unusual vocabulary may look impressive but rarely changes your conversations. Think about the places where English matters in your life. You might need language for customer service, college assignments, meetings, travel, healthcare, parenting, or job applications. Choose words and phrases from those situations. When a new expression solves a real communication problem, your brain has a reason to remember it.
Learn vocabulary in context rather than as isolated translations. Instead of recording 'deadline equals fecha límite,' write a sentence such as 'We need to finish the report before the deadline.' Add a second sentence that belongs to your life. Context shows how the word combines with other words and what tone it carries. It also gives you a starting point when you need to use the word later.
Reviewing at spaced intervals is more effective than repeating a list many times in one sitting. Look at new vocabulary shortly after learning it, then review it the next day, a few days later, and again the following week. During each review, cover the meaning and try to remember it. Recognition is useful, but recall is stronger. Say the word, complete a sentence, or explain it without looking at the answer.
Use new words actively before they feel completely comfortable. Write a short message, describe a picture, record a voice note, or include the word in a conversation. Mistakes during this stage are useful because they show what you understand and what still needs attention. If a word does not fit naturally, check a reliable example and adjust your sentence. Usage turns a word from information into a skill.
Keep your vocabulary system small enough to maintain. A notebook, digital list, or set of cards can work if you return to it regularly. Remove words that no longer matter and group related phrases by situation. The goal is not to collect every possible English word. It is to build a dependable working vocabulary that helps you understand others and express your own ideas with less hesitation.
