Moreover, as the word "sentential" in the title of that work indicates, the language there under consideration was limited to sentences constructed from atomic (not inner logical components) sentences, by use of sentential connectives ("no," "and," "or," etc.) but not including quantifiers ("for all," "there is").

An initial introduction presents an overview of the book. In chapter one, Halperin presents a summary of results from his earlier book, some of which extends into this work. It also contains a novel treatment of the problem of combining evidence: how does one combine two items of interest for a conclusion-each of which separately impart a probability for the conclusion-so as to have a probability for the conclusion based on taking both of the two items of interest as evidence?

Chapter two enlarges the Probability Logic from the first chapter in two respects: the language now includes quantifiers ("for all," and "there is") whose variables range over atomic sentences, not entities as with standard quantifier logic. (Hence its designation: ontological neutral logic.) A set of axioms for this logic is presented. A new sentential notion--the suppositional--in essence due to Thomas Bayes, is adjoined to this logic that later becomes the basis for creating a conditional probability logic.

Chapter three opens with a set of four postulates for probability on ontologically neutral quantifier language. Many properties are derived and a fundamental theorem is proved, namely, for any probability model (assignment of probability values to all atomic sentences of the language) there will be a unique extension of the probability values to all closed sentences of the language.
Author Biography

Theodore Hailperin is emeritus professor of mathematics at Lehigh University. We especially thank the Workshop Organizing Committee, Harry Kesten (Chairman), Richard Holley, and Thomas Liggett for organizing a workshop which brought together scientists and mathematicians in a variety of areas for a fruitful exchange of ideas. George R. Sell Hans Weinherger PREFACE Percolation theory and interacting particle systems both have seen an explosive growth in the last decade. These suhfields of probability theory are closely related to statistical mechanics and many of the publications on these suhjects (especially on the former) appear in physics journals, wit a great variahility in the level of rigour. There is a certain similarity and overlap hetween the methods used in these two areas and, not surprisingly, they tend to attract the same probabilists. It seemed a good idea to organize a workshop on "Percolation Theory and Ergodic Theory of Infinite Particle Systems" in the framework of the special probahility year at the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications in 1985-86. Such a workshop, dealing largely with rigorous results, was indeed held in February 1986.

Number of Pages: 323

Dimensions: 0.71 x 9.21 x 6.14 IN

Publication Date: March 07, 2013

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1016/7910/4298/files/86Q9cY_JZn9781461387367_0f0178cc-e27d-408a-bbf1-11e30db6f635.webp?v=1788545020
probably-not-future-prediction-using-probability-and-statistical-inference-paperback-1
Probably Not: Future Prediction Using Probability and Statistical Inference - Paperback

Report copyright infringement

by Lawrence N. The book is accessible to readers having a basic familiarity with probability, yet allows more advanced readers to quickly grasp the principles underlying Bayesian theory and methods. The examples and computer code allow the reader to understand and implement basic Bayesian data analyses using standard statistical models and to extend the standard models to specialized data analysis situations. The book begins with fundamental notions such as probability, exchangeability and Bayes' rule, and ends with modern topics such as variable selection in regression, generalized linear mixed effects models, and semiparametric copula estimation. Numerous examples from the social, biological and physical sciences show how to implement these methodologies in practice.

Monte Carlo summaries of posterior distributions play an important role in Bayesian data analysis. The open-source R statistical computing environment provides sufficient functionality to make Monte Carlo estimation very easy for a large number of statistical models and example R-code is provided throughout the text. In this first book of its kind using JMP software, Rushing, Karl and Wisnowski demonstrate how to design and analyze experiments for improving the quality, efficiency, and performance of working systems using JMP. Topics include JMP software, two-sample t-test, ANOVA, regression, design of experiments, blocking, factorial designs, fractional-factorial designs, central composite designs, Box-Behnken designs, split-plot designs, optimal designs, mixture designs, and 2 k factorial designs. JMP platforms used include Custom Design, Screening Design, Response Surface Design, Mixture Design, Distribution, Fit Y by X, Matched Pairs, Fit Model, and Profiler. With JMP software, Montgomery's textbook, and Design and Analysis of Experiments by Douglas Montgomery: A Supplement for Using JMP, users will be able to fit the design to the problem, instead of fitting the problem to the design. Particular emphasis is placed on results concern- ing the accuracy oflimit theorems, on higher order approximations, and other approximations in quite a general sense. Contrary to the classical limit theorems that primarily concern the weak convergence of distribution functions, our main results will be formulated in terms of the variational and the Hellinger distance. These results will form the proper springboard for the investigation of parametric approximations of nonparametric models of joint distributions of order statistics. The approxi- mating models include normal as well as extreme value models. Several applications will show the usefulness of this approach. Other recent developments in statistics like nonparametric curve estima- tion and the bootstrap method will be studied as far as order statistics are concerned. 1n connection with this, graphical methods will, to some extent, be explored.

Number of Pages: 355

Dimensions: 0.77 x 9.21 x 6.14 IN

Publication Date: December 21, 2011

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1016/7910/4298/files/zD0ASqHLvZ9781461396222_476ce45c-1ff5-445c-8296-438bbf0b1f21.webp?v=1788545026
business-analytics-using-sas-enterprise-guide-and-sas-enterprise-miner-a-beginners-guide-paperback-1
Business Analytics Using SAS Enterprise Guide and SAS Enterprise Miner: A Beginner's Guide - Paperback

Report copyright infringement

by Olivia Parr-Rud (Author)

This tutorial for data analysts new to SAS Enterprise Guide and SAS Enterprise Miner provides valuable experience using powerful statistical software to complete the kinds of business analytics common to most industries. Weintraub (Author)

Jordan Canonical Form (JCF) is one of the most important, and useful, concepts in linear algebra. The JCF of a linear transformation, or of a matrix, encodes all of the structural information about that linear transformation, or matrix. This book is a careful development of JCF. After beginning with background material, we introduce Jordan Canonical Form and related notions: eigenvalues, (generalized) eigenvectors, and the characteristic and minimum polynomials. We decide the question of diagonalizability, and prove the Cayley-Hamilton theorem. Then we present a careful and complete proof of the fundamental theorem: Let V be a finite-dimensional vector space over the field of complex numbers C, and let T: V → V be a linear transformation. Then T has a Jordan Canonical Form. This theorem has an equivalent statement in terms of matrices: Let A be a square matrix with complex entries. Then A is similar to a matrix J in Jordan Canonical Form, i.e., there is an invertible matrix P and a matrix J in Jordan Canonical Form with A = PJP-1. We further present an algorithm to find P and J, assuming that one can factor the characteristic polynomial of A. In developing this algorithm we introduce the eigenstructure picture (ESP) of a matrix, a pictorial representation that makes JCF clear. The ESP of A determines J, and a refinement, the labeled eigenstructure picture (ℓESP) of A, determines P as well. We illustrate this algorithm with copious examples, and provide numerous exercises for the reader. Material is introduced in a structured manner: each new concept is followed by a problem set that explores the content in detail. Each book ends with a problem set that reviews both concepts presented in the current volume and related topics from previous volumes. The series forms a learning continuum that explores strategies specific to competitive mathematics in depth and breadth. Full solutions explain both reasoning and execution. Often, several solutions are contrasted. The problem selection emphasizes comprehension, critical thinking, observation, and avoiding repetitive and mechanical procedures. Ready to participate in a math competition such as AMC-8, AMC-10, Math Kangaroo in USA, Math Leagues, USAMTS, or AIME? This series will open the doors to consistent performance.

About Level 3 This level of the series is designed for students who can solve linear equations, are fluent with fractions, and can factor into primes. The problem sets are designed to strengthen specific areas where we know students have difficulty on AMC-8 and AMC-10. The level 3 books are a strong preparation for AMC-8 and a partial preparation for AMC-10 and AIME. Level 3 consists of: Word Problems (volume 9), Arithmetic and Number Theory (volume 10), Operations and Algebra (volume 11), Geometry (volume 12), and Combinatorics (volume 13). Gauss observed that the number 1. 85407467 . . . is (essentially) a rational value of an elliptic integral-an observation that was critical in the development of nineteenth century analysis. How do we decide that such a number is actually a special value of a familiar function without the tools Gauss had at his disposal, which were, presumably, phenomenal insight and a prodigious memory? Part of the answer, we hope, lies in this volume. This book is structured like a reverse telephone book, or more accurately, like a reverse handbook of special function values. It is a list of just over 100,000 eight-digit real numbers in the interval [0,1) that arise as the first eight digits of special values of familiar functions. It is designed for people, like ourselves, who encounter various numbers computationally and want to know if these numbers have some simple form. This is not a particularly well-defined endeavor-every eight-digit number is rational and this is not interesting. However, the chances of an eight digit number agreeing with a small rational, say with numerator and denominator less than twenty-five, is small. Thus the list is comprised primarily of special function evaluations at various algebraic and simple transcendental values. The exact numbers included are described below. Each entry consists of the first eight digits after the decimal point of the number in question.

Number of Pages: 434

Dimensions: 0.89 x 11 x 8.25 IN

Illustrated: Yes

Publication Date: December 30, 2011

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1016/7910/4298/files/xTb72wtDhU9781461585121_cd01f6f4-74ca-46d5-a2dc-505341922e6f.webp?v=1788545032
healthcare-analytics-foundations-and-frontiers-paperback-1
Healthcare Analytics: Foundations and Frontiers - Paperback

Report copyright infringement

by Ross M. Edip Yüksel responds and refutes critics and skeptics, such as: Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips: Sunni scholar Carl Sagan: astronomer, astrophysicist, cosmologist, and skeptic author Daniel Abdurrahman Lomax: Sunni computer engineer Ayman Mutaakher: anonymous Sunni critic James (Amazing) Randi: founder of Randi Foundation, a skeptic activist Michael Shermer: editor and publisher of the Skeptic Magazine, author, columnist The miraculous function of the number 19 prophesized in Chapter 74 was unveiled in 1974 through a computerized analysis of the Quran. Though, in retrospect, the implication of 19 in Chapter 74 traditionally called Hidden One, were obvious, it remained a secret for 1406 (19x74) lunar years after the revelation of the Quran. Ironically, the first words of the Chapter 74, The Hidden One, was revealing, yet the code was a divinely guarded gift allocated to the computer generation; they were the one who would need and appreciate it the most. As we have demonstrated in various books, hundreds of simple and complex algorithms, we witness the depth and breath of mathematical manipulation of Arabic, an arbitrary human language, to be profound and extraordinary. This is the fulfillment of a Quranic challenge (17:88). While the meaning of the Quranic text and its literal excellence was kept, all its units, from chapters, verses, words to its letters were also assigned universally recognizable roles in creation of mathematical patterns. Since its discovery, the number 19 of the Quran and the Bible has increased the appreciation of many of those who acknowledge the truth, has removed doubts in the minds of many People of the Book, and has caused discord, controversy and chaos among those who have traded the Quran with men-made sectarian teachings. This is indeed a fulfillment of a Quranic prophecy (74:30-31). 14.The improbability and impossibility of the numerical structure of the Quran being produced by a medieval Arab genius becomes evident when we consider the following factors: -It includes simple elements of the Quran and goes deeper to an interlocking system of complex numerical patterns and relationships. -It involves not only frequencies of letters and words but also the numerical values of letters. -It involves not only an intricate numerical pattern but also a huge set of data consisting of units with multiple functions, such as letters that are also digits, words that are also numbers. -The nemeroliteral aspect of the Quran were not known by the adherents of the Quran until late 1960s and especially, 1974. -The literary aspect of the Quran has received praises from many literary giants throughout centuries. -The scientific accuracy of Quranic statements on various fields has been immaculate. -Muhammad was one of the busiest and greatest social and political reformists in human history. -The timing of the discovery of the code is precise and prophetic. -A series of prophetic events regarding the code has been fulfilled.

Number of Pages: 504

Dimensions: 1.12 x 9.02 x 5.98 IN

Publication Date: February 25, 2012

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1016/7910/4298/files/RZ-kM34j-M9780982586730_76f96f12-1aae-4504-91c0-6e1c76e24ab1.webp?v=1788545034
matched-sampling-for-causal-effects-paperback-1
Matched Sampling for Causal Effects - Paperback

Report copyright infringement

by Donald B. This book presents a selection of Donald B. Rubin's research articles on matched sampling, from the early 1970s, when the author was one of the major researchers involved in establishing the field, to recent contributions to this now extremely active area. The articles include fundamental theoretical studies that have become classics, important extensions, and real applications that range from breast cancer treatments to tobacco litigation to studies of criminal tendencies. They are organized into seven parts, each with an introduction by the author that provides historical and personal context and discusses the relevance of the work today. A concluding essay offers advice to investigators designing observational studies. Since then, outlier detection has been studied on a large variety of data types including high-dimensional data, uncertain data, stream data, network data, time series data, spatial data, and spatio-temporal data. While there have been many tutorials and surveys for general outlier detection, we focus on outlier detection for temporal data in this book. A large number of applications generate temporal datasets. For example, in our everyday life, various kinds of records like credit, personnel, financial, judicial, medical, etc., are all temporal. This stresses the need for an organized and detailed study of outliers with respect to such temporal data.In the past decade, there has been a lot of research on various forms of temporal data including consecutive data snapshots, series of data snapshots and data streams. Besides the initial work on time series, researchers have focused on rich forms of data including multiple data streams, spatio-temporal data, network data, community distribution data, etc. Compared to general outlier detection, techniques for temporal outlier detection are very different. In this book, we will present an organized picture of both recent and past research in temporal outlier detection. We start with the basics and then ramp up the reader to the main ideas in state-of-the-art outlier detection techniques. We motivate the importance of temporal outlier detection and brief the challenges beyond usual outlier detection. Then, we list down a taxonomy of proposed techniques for temporal outlier detection. Such techniques broadly include statistical techniques (like AR models, Markov models, histograms, neuralnetworks), distance- and density-based approaches, grouping-based approaches (clustering, community detection), network-based approaches, and spatio-temporal outlier detection approaches. We summarize by presenting a wide collection of applications where temporal outlier detection techniques have been applied to discover interesting outliers. How can we find patterns, communities, outliers, in a social network? Which are the most central nodes in a network? These are the questions that motivate this work. Networks and graphs appear in many diverse settings, for example in social networks, computer-communication networks (intrusion detection, traffic management), protein-protein interaction networks in biology, document-text bipartite graphs in text retrieval, person-account graphs in financial fraud detection, and others. In this work, first we list several surprising patterns that real graphs tend to follow. Then we give a detailed list of generators that try to mirror these patterns. Generators are important, because they can help with "what if" scenarios, extrapolations, and anonymization. Then we provide a list of powerful tools for graph analysis, and specifically spectral methods (Singular Value Decomposition (SVD)), tensors, and case studies like the famous "pageRank" algorithm and the "HITS" algorithm for ranking web search results. Finally, we conclude with a survey of tools and observations from related fields like sociology, which provide complementary viewpoints.
